--- Spring Scholarships and Honors for 2013

Every year the Physics and Astronomy department offers students the ability to apply for scholarships or other honors managed by the department, the college, or the university. These scholarships and honors are designed with the purpose of promoting excelience in Physics and Astronomy.

 
Hart-Sipson Endowed Scholarship (Online Application Form)
Application Deadline: Friday, March 22, 2013
Award Amount: $500
Description:
This scholarship is designed to encourage excellence in physics. It is named for two retired Physics faculty at MSUM, Dr. Gerald Hart and Dr. Roger Sipson.
Eligibility Requirements:
MSUM physics majors or minors who will be enrolled in the physics program in Fall 2013.

The department will select a winner based on the strength of his or her physics coursework and on strengths in one or more of the following areas:
• Research Activities
• Outreach Activities
• Service to department
A student need not have experience in all of the areas above to be considered for the scholarship.
The areas of emphasize for the next several years is below:
• 2013: Outreach Activities
• 2014: Service to Department
• 2015: Research Activities
• 2016: Outreach Activities

Physics Department Scholarship (Online Application Form)
Application Deadline: Friday, March 22, 2013
Award Amount: Four awards of $250 each
Description: The award is meant to encourage students to do research in physics. Students who have not done any research are particularly encouraged to apply.
Eligibility Requirements: The Physics Department Scholarship is open to any physics major or minor.

Students who have not done any research are particularly encouraged to apply. A good first step is to talk to faculty in the department about the research they do....just drop by office hours and ask! Projects proposing specific outreach activities are also encouraged.

Worman Scholarship (Online Application Form)
Application Deadline: Friday, March 22, 2013

Award Amount: $800
Description:
The Worman Scholarship supports students who studying astronomy at MSUM.
Eligibility Requirements:
MSUM physics majors with Emphasis in Astronom ywho will be enrolled in the physics program in Fall 2010. Applicants must have completed a minimum of one astronomy course.

Selection of the scholarship will be based on academic performance, involvement in astronomy outside of astronomy courses taken, and on a short statement describing why you are interested in astronomy.

Walt Wesley Memorial Scholarship (Online copy of Application materials)
Application Deadline: Friday, March 22, 2013
Award Amount: $1,000
Description:
This scholarship is designed to encourage excellence in physics. It is named for Walt Wesley, a former Physics faculty at MSUM.
Eligibility Requirements:
MSUM physics majors who will be enrolled in the physics program in Fall 2013. Applicants must have completed a minimum of one year of physics courses.

The department will select a winner based on the strength of his or her essay in response to the question in the application. Details on how the essays will be judged are in the application materials.
